At first try to look for a lead where R and S waves are of equal size. If you find such a lead, the axis is perpendicular to that leads axis and is directed towards the positive pole of the lead where R wave is the tallest. If there is no lead with equal R and S waves, anyway find the lead which most resembles the lead you want. The axis will be almost perpendicular, little bit deflected towards whichever wave is bigger.

If its just to know about right/left deviations, look for the tallest R wave in leads I,II and III, which signify a left,normal and right deviation of the axis.

To check axis instantly just check lead1&2.
