At first try to look for a lead where R and S waves are of equal size. If you find such a lead, the axis is perpendicular to that leads axis and is directed towards the positive pole of the lead where R wave is the tallest. If there is no lead with equal R and S waves, anyway find the lead which most resembles the lead you want. The axis will be almost perpendicular, little bit deflected towards whichever wave is bigger.

He,look for tallest R in limb leads axis must be parrallel to it reply above is also correct see also deepest S axis will be opposite to the lead axis for exact axis you should combine all three.Download and study 12 lead ECG from cardiology e books from medicalgeek you will find how it is easy to determine the axis. All the best.

If its just to know about right/left deviations, look for the tallest R wave in leads I,II and III, which signify a left, normal and right deviation of the axis.

Read Magic Of ECG chapter in Book Primer of ECG By K.PMisra.

if you see only 2 limb leads you can predict results of other limblead and unipolar augmented leads also.

To check axis instantly just check lead1&2.
    both positive: normal axis
    L1 +ve & L2 -ve -- Left axis deviation
    L1 -ve & L2 +ve -- Right axix deviation

L1 & aVF both +ve -- must be normal axis

L1 +ve, aVF -ve -- Left Axis deviation

    L1 -ve, aVF +ve -- R Axis deviation

to read ecgs well, you should know not only the criteria with which to diagnose axis deviation, but also the extent of axis deviation with which to call LAFB and LPFB, and the exceptions to these fascicular blocks.
