Thread: amitriptiline for headache?

Amitriptyline is a tricyclic anti-depressent then why amitriptiline is used for chronic pain ( even in a patient who might not have depression)whats its mechanism of reduction of pain?

anti-depressants works by several mechanism.
Revise all and one of them helps to ease pain and prevent headaches by which Amitriptyline works.
Mostly used as Chronic Preventive Migraine Medications.

i think it inhibits substance p and thus reduces pain

guys , its simple. amitryptiline causes the release of endogenous opioids in the body which acting on opioid receptors help reduce the pain
