      Question 1234? :)

we usually r told in clinical vignettes that a person has got ankle edema

1+, 2+ or 4+ etc, then we r usually told that a person has got proteinuria 2+, 4+ etc. can any body explain what do these values objectively mean?(just a question, not a test question)

i think its just a matter of clinical judgement as to edeme. well, i dont know what values actually are meant by proteinuria. may be labs tell this.

Check on the index, first page or the last page where these values are explained. They are definitely some kind of grading system used in this book.

i think i did not convey my question properly. the question was not related to any book.its related to MCQ's in which while giving data about the patient we r told that e.g;" Mr Beans presents to clinic suffering from hemptysis and hematuria. he has got 3+ ankle edeme and his urinanalysis shows 4+ proteinuria......so and so"
my question is wht do these numerals like 4+ edema and 3+ proteinuria etc actually and objectively mean and how to measue these figures in clinical examination?

NO there is grading of edema.
      +1 = only ankle edema
      +2 = upto knee
      +3 = upto abdomen
      +4 = Generalised edema (anasarca)

      Grades of Proteinuria:
      +1 = proteinuria below 0.5 g/day
      +2 = 0.5–1 g/day
      +3 = 1–2 g/day
      +4 = more than 2 g/day
