What is the difference between Spleenomegaly & Hypersplenism? Mention criteria to define them.

That's an interesting question. I haven't studied medicine yet, but from clinical observation i guess that hypersplenism is due to increase activity of spleen which leads to altered hematology findings.(low Hb is think) The spleen may or may no be enlarged.

But in splenomegaly it is enlarged because of congestion of blood there.

But the think i don't understand is that in Robbins pathology it's written

This brings the confusion again.

Perhaps i'm wrong. Let's hear the correct definition from our seniors out here.

@ Amal, portal hypertension will cause congestion of spleen and therefore splenomegaly.. this is due to congestion of splenic vessels that forms part of the portal vein...

I know this boss. I don't understand why when there is splenomegaly due to congestion, there may be altered hematology findings. I think that because the blood cells remain in the reticular system of spleen for too long and get hemolysed. (Well, this is only my thoughts, haven't seen this written anywhere).
