California has one of the highest malpractice insurances in the US, and the cost of living is also very high compared to the rest of the us. I may end up doing my residency in California because there are so many good programs there. Also it would be good to be close to the many fellowship opportunities in California. But in the end I am not sure if I want to practice there. I was under the impression that where ever you do your residency was the part of the country that you will practice.

Because California is such a difficult place to do your residency, you will most likely have the opportunity to go to the majority of places in the US after you are done there. I was not aware of this until recently.

Things on the east coast of the US are very different than the west coast. In speaking to some residents, they say that in general you are treated a lot better on the west coast during your residency. Just another thing to keep in mind.
