Pyogenic refers to bacterial infections that make pus.
The pus is mostly composed of dead neutrophils that are destroyed by bacteria such as Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus through the release of leukocidins. Therefore leukocidin producing bacteria are usually referred to as pyogenic.
