As mentioned before, the chances of obtaining the residency position that you want will increase proportionally to the excellence of your credentials when applying. An outstanding applicant will receive more invitations to interview at more acknowledged institutions, and can decide among several options which is the one that he/she prefers. An applicant with regular credentials should probably accept any offer he/she might receive (if an offer is made of course!) even when that position is not at his/her total like.
In order to outstand from other applicants, you must get as closer as you can to the outstanding applicant's profile:
• USMLE steps 1, and 2 CK passed with scores of 90+.
• USMLE step 2 CS passed in all it subcomponents.
• ECFMG certification at hand (if an IMG).
• USMLE step 3 passed with a score of 90+.
• United States clinical experience (clerkships, externships, observerships, research). The longer the experience and at renowned academic hospitals, your application will be stronger.
• Letters of Recommendation from physician working in the United States. If the physician works in a renowned academic hospital, the letters will be stronger.
• Publications in peer-review medical journals.
• Strong medical school background (awards, high scores in your transcript, and a strong dean's letter).
• An original and well structured personal statement.
Certainly, none is an absolute condition and each one is more or less considered by the different residency programs. But, the more points from this profile that you get, your application will be considered by more PD's and ranked at a higher level.
