t is impossible to succeed at an American university without a good grasp of the English language. American universities require non-native speakers to prove their English proficiency, usually by submitting scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (toefl). High toefl scores won't guarantee you admission to the school of your choice, but low scores could damage your chances. Kaplan's toefl for the Computer can help you prepare for this challenging exam.

Kaplan's strategy is "know thy enemy"–the more you know about the toefl, the better you'll do. Detailed information about the exam is supplemented by an eight-step study plan and other general advice. A diagnostic sample test will help you analyze your strengths and weaknesses, and comprehensive "Power Lessons" focus on the four parts of the exam. These power lessons teach you to recognize everything from "distractors" (wrong answers that look correct) in the listening sections to "Main Ideas" in the reading sections. A great review of grammar rules and advice on how to plan and write a successful essay lead into a second practice exam so you can see how much you've improved. Best of all, the enclosed CD-ROM provides additional review questions, power lessons, and a sample test so you can familiarize yourself with the computer-based exam. There's even a typing test to help you determine whether you should take the essay-writing section on the computer or on paper. This incredibly thorough book comes highly recommended. –C.B. Delaney

Amazon.com Review:

This book was an excellent guide in teaching how to master in the exam. When I went to take the exam, I had no surprises at all. Instead, I was ready for any kind of questions, ideas, tricks, and most importantly; very comfortable with the layout of the exam software. The book’s accompanying CD has Complete FULL sample exams with their model answer key (including answers to the Oral Section, as well as the Written Section).

For those who do not have much time to study for their TOEFL exam, please do not worry. In less than 10 days, I was able to finish the whole book with reading periods of 3 to 4 hours per day. The book has very simple to understand English language; yet it presents a strong structure in their flow of sentences.

Another main advantage of the book is that it is divided to 8 chapters; each chapter introducing various questions in different theme: Technology, History, Nature…etc. Studying the first four chapters allows you to be more than ready for the exam as they introduce all the question types. The latter four chapters repeat the same question types but in different themes - which really broadens your knowledge to different words that you may expect on the exam.

I still did not get my TOEFL score yet, but I am more than certain that if it would be disappointing, it would be for some reason other than this book. You will not regret buying this book.
