| Surgeons do hand job...( more of hand skills ) Physicians do mind job... ( more of knowledge & abstract thinking based ) ...but both groups needs to have both qualities in optimum levels to work in optimum level of competence. At the end of the day both are equally great in their own fields and we can't compare a singer with a dancer! If one want to be successful in profession she/he needs to have not only good hand ( hand skills ), good head ( knowledge ) ... but also a good heart(empathetic communication with patients & attendants ) |

| One question to you ppl. All non-medico ppl have impression in their mind that surgeons are better than physician. All my relatives and friends tell me to join Sx in PG and i wanted to be a pediatrician or cardio/neurophysician after doing residency in internalmedicine. I tell them this than they force me to join Sx and tell that no scope in IM & blah blah.... I really don't know wht to answer such ppl and how to explain them?????? They think if Surgeon does one operation, he gets 5K or 10K or more rupees and physician gets nothing. damm it.. they don't think how many patients physician examine and treat daily and they need to visit physician more than Sx usually.

| Many physicians and surgeons work long, irregular hours; almost one-third of physicians worked 60 or more hours a week in 2002. New physicians are much less likely to enter solo practice and more likely to work as salaried employees of group medical practices, clinics, hospitals, or health networks. Formal education and training requirements are among the most demanding of any occupation, but earnings are among the highest. Physicians and surgeons serve a fundamental role in our society and have an effect upon all our lives. They diagnose illnesses and prescribe and administer treatment for people suffering from injury or disease. Physicians examine patients, obtain medical histories, and order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests. They counsel patients on diet, hygiene, and preventive healthcare. There are two types of physicians: M.D.Doctor of Medicineand D.O.Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. M.D.s also are known as allopathic physicians. While both M.D.s and D.O.s may use all accepted methods of treatment, including drugs and surgery, D.O.s place special emphasis on the bodys musculoskeletal system, preventive medicine, and holistic patient care. D.O.s are more likely than M.D.s to be primary care specialists although they can be found in all specialties. About half of D.O.s practice general or family medicine, general internal medicine, or general pediatrics. Physicians work in one or more of several specialties, including, but not limited to, anesthesiology, family and general medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, and surgery.
