In Türkiye, surgeons know internal medicine as well as physicians, so they both know and do everything.

Personally i beleive, Surgery is a branch that requires a lot of hard work,am from civil hospital surat and ve seen our surgery residents work round the clock....medicine is a much cooler branch, ppl get more time for themselves.
ultimately i stand for surgery, its more fascinating.
I'd continue:
Surgeons know nothing but they do everything,
Physicians know everything but they do nothing(as compared to surgeons),
and Gynecologists know nothing and they do nothing. And Pathologist do everything and know everything, but it's too late.

both are separate branches by themselves and none is better than the other in their field. Its only when the lines are crossed and when the surgeon starts feeling he can treat medicines cases better and starts feeling that each medicine case is a surgical one and the physician starts treating every surgical case medically and hands it over to the surgeon at a very late stage that things start going wrong. It should be a symbiotic relationship and not a competitive one.

i agree with mohini123. The point is to provide the patient the best care possible. Depending on what the patient has, one or the other might have more expertise in handling certain conditions. The choice of whether to go into medicine or surgery would depend on the student's inclination too. Some people (like me!) do not necessarily enjoy surgery...whereas others excel in that particular field. Choose the specialty which gives you personal satisfaction...especially since you'll be in it for life !

Cool

All rhetorics aside we all know that Surgeons and Physicians do need each other and compliment each other. None of them can manage without the help of other. But Surgeons do have an edge over for the fact that 'usually' their job begins where a Physician's job ends. They're constantly exploring the frontiers and actually get 'inside' and get their hands dirty and physically remove the problem when it gets out of Physicians hands or is beyond their control. I may be biased coz after all Surgery is where my heart lies. This however does not mean that they do not have logic or common medical sense. We are not mere carpenters. Woods dont die but humans do die if we screw up. There's no margin for error.

Cheers,
dj

I think that it depends where you are. In US, some positions pay better and some are referred to as lifestyle specialties. There are pros and cons to everything. That said...

A crap joke:
What is a double-blind study?
Two orthopaedic surgeons and an ECG.

finally if u want to choose, choose what fits to ur personality, physical capabilities and ur interest
In the Future, medicine will be preventive; will need fewer surgeons, and now this is reflecting in the residency, there are more physicians than surgeons.
