Latest CDC guidelines say yes. Since we have started doing this in our ED we have found lots and lots of cases. Interestingly, a very significant percentage of these new HIV+ cases are asymptomatic females who deny risk factors. Furthermore, of the cases being caught since this policy has been implemented in our ED, 90% of these patients have previously been seen at the ED within the last 2 years but were not tested at that time. Makes you wonder how many cases would be caught if all the ED's followed the CDC's guidelines.

YES all patient have to be screened for AIDS.

But there are always people hoe doesn't want to know that. (Don't ask me why! )

But for these persons they have to say active NO, and then the test won't be done. At least this is the way how the Netherlands are working with pregnant women.

I think it should be important to screen people for AIDS, it should be standars. We wouldthen prevent so many accidental infections and deaths. Nowadays, it shouldn't be shameful to admit one has AIDS, as we have learned quite so much about it.

It should be standard only if it affects directly other people's health, for example pregnant women or people undergoing surgery. It is true that we presently know much more about it that 10 or 20 years ago but we still donīt have a cure for it.
