Should a woman change her surname after marriage?
    21 Jan, 2009 l 2000 hrs IST

Actor-turned-politician Sanjay Dutt's recent statement that a woman must change her surname post marriage has stirred up quite a controversy given the modern times we live in. In an indirect reference to his sister Congress MP Priya Dutt, the actor has stated that post marriage, women must abandon their parents' surname.

Munnabhai believes that using maiden names might be the latest fad, but according to him it shows disrespect to the person they have married. In a day and age when women are matching strides with their male counterparts, is Dutt only revealing his chauvanism when he makes these derogatory remarks? The choice of retaining her maiden surname shouldn't it belong to the lady concerned? Does the identity of a married woman lie only in her surname?

I'm a huge believer in tradition. I think that tradition helps keep the world together and not get out of hand. So I say I would.
