Unhappy Doctor's Strike - A time for lot of Introspection

By Dr.Vikram Lotwala

After the recent strike by MARD in maharastra now the FHO in Maharastra are on strike.

Unconfirmed reports say that the JDA (Junior Doctor Association) Gujarat is also planning for strike tomorrow onwards.

These both associations main demand is salary hike. Is it justified or not, I am no authority to decide. There are some points definately to ponder.
The residents quaters in Maharastra and specially Mumbai are horrible.
I mean what i say. Same way, the services in villages have no incentives for doctors to stay there.

Patient services in rural hospitals and primary health centres came to a grinding halt on Tuesday with more than 8,000 doctors from the Federation of Health Officers (FHO) going on a strike for an indefinite period. Only deliveries, emergencies and post-mortems were conducted. The FHO, comprising medical officers, district health officers and civil surgeons at rural healthcare centres (including mental and civil hospitals), has been demanding a better pay scale and timebound promotions; now they have threatened to stop even emergency services if the government does not respond to their demands by Thursday.

The strike will also deal a major blow to 10 central health programmes, with the doctors refusing to participate in preventive and awareness activities or maintain data. Doctors have been requesting the government to adopt the 6th Pay Commission, which will increase our pay scales from Rs 9,300 to Rs 15,600 and prompt doctors to accept rural postings.

Post your suggestions.

9300rs is really less... A strike is a must... I think there must be a syndicate that can fight for an increase in pay..

Default Striking TN medicos call off stir

Chennai,16 July 2009:

The striking medicos demanding hike in stipend ended their 16-day long strike this noon after a meeting with the State Health Minister M.R.K. Paneerselvam.

This is following the Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s toughening stand on Tuesday insisting on withdrawal of their stir as a precondition for holding talks with them.

The striking medicos, who were on indefinite fast since July 14. symbolically ended their strike by taking the juice provided by the Health secretary. A delegation called on the Health Minister this afternoon, who conveyed their decision the Chief Minister before announcing the media persons.

The medicos, who are on strike under the banner of Tamil Nadu Non Service Medical and Dental PGs & CRRI Association, had their general body meeting yesterday and decided to end the strike today at the Secretariat, placing all their hopes on the Chief Minister. The government’s open mind to consider all their demands was encouraging, the mass media secretary of the association Dr. Arul of the Stanley Medical college told this correspondent of the Asian Tribune.

He also said they have got an appointment to meet the Chief Minister tomorrow when all the issues would find an amicable solution. He said that the promise of no witch hunting from the Chief Minister was appealing. Dr. Maria Subison is the president of the medicos association.

The medicos were on strike from July1, demanding a hike in their stipend. They not only struck work but also resorted to demonstrations and protests. They were on indefinite strike since Monday. Throughout the State there were 80 students on indefinite fast. The situation became serious with 31 of them losing consciousness in the two-day fast. The parents of the medicos also joined in the indefinite fast from today.

The Tamil Nadu Government had increased the stipend to Rs 6,000 from Rs 4,500 for House Surgeons which is better than what such persons are being paid in Delhi’s AIIMS, Karnataka, Orissa, Puducherry and Punjab among others,” the Chief Minister had said in the Assembly. This was rejected by medicos earlier.

The mass media secretary thanked the option given by the chief minister to end the strike paving way for their service to the patients and sick to continue soon.
